Jess Davies, Madeline Grummitt and Ben Stewart attended the Southern Queensland Land Rehabilition Group (SQLRG) Field Day! During the event, they heard from industry professionals about innovative approaches to reducing pollution, improving water quality, and integrating nature-based solutions across South-East Queensland.
Key insights included strategies to prevent plastic contamination, supported by Queensland’s Zero Litter to the Bay by 2030 initiative, as well as the growing impact of tyre wear particles, now recognised as the largest global source of microplastics. The team also learned about promising new PFAS-removal technologies emerging from the Virid AU, ALS and UQ research collaboration, alongside ALS’s efforts to expand testing to capture a wider range of PFAS compounds.
The Field Day concluded with a site tour of the Cannery Creek sewer upgrade, demonstrating how nature-based design can replace traditional infrastructure to reduce overflows, restore wetland systems, and improve water quality for the surrounding community 🌱
